Should we all be Teetotalers?

It is a mistake to think that we should all be teetotalers...

Of course it may be the choice of any person, at any time, to abstain from alcohol, either because they cannot drink at all without drinking too much, or because they want to give the money to the poor, or because they are with people who are inclined to drunkenness and must not encourage them by drinking themselves. But the whole point is that they are abstaining from alcohol for a good reason.

One common mistake many people make is they cannot give up a thing themselves without wanting everyone else to give it up. An individual may see fit to give up all sorts of things for special reasons... marriage, or meat, or alcohol, or the cinema; but the moment they start saying the things are bad in themselves or looking down their nose at other people who do enjoy them... they have taken a wrong turn.

A man who makes sports or his motorcycle the center of his life, or a woman who devotes all her energy to her career are being just as "intemperate" as someone who gets drunk every evening. Of course, it does not show on the outside so easily: career-mania or sports-mania do not make you fall down in the middle of the road.
